Neil Patrick Harris took birth in Albuquerque, New Mexico. His parents Sheila H. and Ron Harris were lawyers, and he has an older brother. Neil attended La Cueva High School in Albuquerque. During his high school years, he had been very popular in school plays and musicals etc. In 1991, Neil graduated with honors.
Discovering his interest in acting, Harris started acting in his childhood. Playwright Mark Medoff discovered him at a Drama Camp in Las Cruces, NM and offered him a role in 1988 movie ‘Clara’s Heart’. In the same year, Neil also made an appearance in ‘Purple People Eater’. Next year, he won the lead in ‘Doogie Howser, MD and received a Golden Globe nomination for it. After ‘Doogie Howser, MD’, Harris made guest appearances on several TV shows.
His first movie role was in 1995 movie ‘Animal Room’ where he portrayed the part of an adult. His next appearances were on ‘The Next Best Thing’, ‘Undercover Brother’, ‘Starship Troopers’, ‘Harold & Kumar Go to White Castle’ and ‘Harold & Kumar Escape from Guantanamo Bay’ etc. During 1999-2000, Harris appeared on ‘Stark Raving Mad’, a sitcom. In 1994, Neil appeared on ‘Snowbound: The Jim and Jennifer Stolpa Story’. In the following year, Patrick appeared on ‘My Antonia’. He was next seen on ‘A Christmas Wish’ in 1998 and he appeared on ‘Joan of Arc’ in 1999. In 2001, Neil was seen on ‘The Wedding Dress’ and in 2005, he became a part of ‘Christmas Blessing’.
On Broadway, Neil worked in both musical and dramatic roles. In the 2001 concert performances of ‘Sweeney Todd’, he was seen portraying Tobias Ragg. In 2002, he was seen in the Broadway production ‘Proof’. In 2003, he appeared as Emcee in ‘Cabaret’ and this role made him the top drawing headliner in the role of the Emcee. In the following year, 2004, Neil was seen portraying a dual role, as Balladeer and Lee Harvey Oswald, in the controversial musical revival of ‘Assassins’. On the Nonesuch recording of Sondheim’s ‘Evening Primrose’, Neil sang the role of Charles.
Harris next appeared on the musical ‘RENT”, portraying the character of Mark Cohen.
His excellent performance as a serial womanizer in ‘How I met Your Mother’ earned him a 2007 and 2008 Emmy nomination.
In 2007, he worked along with Mike Nelson on an audio commentary for RiffTrax. In 2008, Harris starred on ‘Dr. Horrible’s Sing-Along Blog’, a musical web series, along with Nathan Fillion and Felicia Day.
The man has been openly gay in his personal life and in the theater community. In September 2007, Harris and Burtka attended Emmy Awards as an openly acknowledged gay couple. They are together since April, 2004.
On April 5, 2008, Harris played ‘Not My Job’ on the NPR news quiz show Wait Wait… Don’t Tell Me!
Harris is a huge fan of magic. In fact, he’s a good magician himself. He also serves on the Board of Directors of Hollywood’s Magic Castle and hosted the 2008 World Magic Awards on October 11, 2008.
